What Is TIN?
The expanded form of it is Taxpayer Identification Number. TIN is an identification number provided to business enterprises for tracking their transactions. It is basically required for those entities that are registered under VAT for trade of goods and services.
Difference Between PAN, TAN And TIN
These terms are related to Income Tax but these are very confusing. All three terms have similar sound but they differ in meanings and purpose. Here I am giving you clear difference about these terms. Difference between these terms are as follows-
Permanent Account Number (PAN)
A Permanent Account Number or PAN is a 10 digit alphanumeric code. Income Tax Department is authorized to issue it and it is compulsory for every entity involved in economic activity beyond a specified financial limit in the country. PAN is helpful in identification of financial transactions.
Tax Deduction And Collection Account Number (TAN)
It is also a unique 10 digit alpha numeric code but the primary purpose of it is related to deduction or collection of tax. All entities who deduct or collect tax must required a TAN. It is issued by Income tax department.
Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)
Taxpayer Identification Number is a 11 digit (first 2 digits are the state code) numeric code. Here the things that need to notice is that it is not alphanumeric. It is compulsory for traders or dealers who deals in transactions which attract VAT( Value added tax). All businesses that participate in interstate trade are required to have a TIN. A TIN is also called the VAT Number or Sales Tax Number. So friends do not get confused about these names of TIN. It is issued by Commercial Tax Department of respective state.
How To Apply For TIN Number?
We can apply for Taxpayers Identification Number in both offline and online mode. The Commercial Tax Department of any state is responsible for issuing TIN to registered enterprises. Because Tax identification number is mandatory while submitting VAT therefore it is furnished automatically at the time of registration. It is used to identify businesses which are registered under VAT. This is an effective way to track all transactions carried out by business enterprises in the country. The steps to apply for TIN differ from one state to another state because it is provided by the state government.
Steps For Online
1) As per the state government, sign in to the respective VAT portal with unique login ID.
2)Fill up the application form with required details.
3)Now upload necessary documents.
4) Click on submit. After this the Commercial Tax Department of the respective state will do verification
5) Now you will receive a provisional certification with allotted Tax Identification Number.
6) At this step a VAT inspector from the concerned state government take a physical visit at business address for final verification.
7) After the confirmation of verification you will receive the final certification.
Documents Required To Apply For TIN
As already mentioned that tax identification number is provided by state government therefore the documents required for it also differ from state to state. Here is the list of general documents required for it which is applicable to all states in the country. These documents are as follows –
1)Proof of identity
3) Proof of address of the business enterprise
4) PAN card of proprietor along with 4 to 6 passport sized photographs
